Hull man jailed after brutal attack that nearly killed young woman
Tommy Ward, 23, was jailed for three years after carrying out a violent and sustained attack on a young woman in Hull that left her with serious injuries and came close to costing her life.
Ward, of Hull Road in Hedon, was sentenced following an incident in July 2022 in which he subjected the victim to a vicious assault. The court heard that Ward attempted to suffocate the woman and inflicted significant facial injuries during what police described as a “brutal attack”.
After the assault, Ward fled the scene and deliberately destroyed his mobile phones in an attempt to dispose of evidence. Despite this, investigators were able to gather sufficient evidence, leading to his arrest, charge and eventual remand in custody.
The court was told that the victim had been unaware of Ward’s previous background and that she had young children who could have been placed at serious risk. Police said Ward had deceived those around him, including those responsible for monitoring him, and had blatantly disregarded legal restrictions placed upon him.
At an earlier court appearance, Ward admitted to a number of offences, including assault by beating, non-fatal suffocation, criminal damage, theft, witness intimidation, and sending electronic communications intended to cause distress. He also pleaded guilty to breaching notification requirements under the Sexual Offences Act 2003.
The court heard that Ward had previously been placed on the sex offenders’ register and was subject to strict conditions, including having no contact with children. These requirements were imposed after he was cautioned in October 2021 for possession of an indecent image of a child. Despite this, he went on to breach those conditions.
Speaking after sentencing, Detective Constable Daniel Radford said the attack was “truly appalling” and praised the victim for her courage in coming forward. He stated that her actions may have prevented further victims from being harmed and potentially saved lives.
The court was told that the impact on the victim had been profound, leaving her fearful and traumatised. Officers reiterated the importance of reporting domestic abuse and assured victims that support services are available.
Ward was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment.

Clare’s Law (Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme)
Clare’s Law allows individuals to request information from the police about a current or former partner’s history of domestic abuse or violent behaviour. It also enables police to proactively disclose information if they believe someone may be at risk.
Anyone concerned about their own safety or the safety of someone they know can contact their local police force to make a Clare’s Law request. This information can be vital in helping people make informed decisions and protecting potential victims from harm.
Sarah’s Law (Child Sex Offender Disclosure Scheme)
Ward is also subject to Sarah’s Law, which allows parents, carers, and guardians to formally ask police whether an individual who has access to a child has a history of sexual offences or poses a risk to children. Where appropriate, police can disclose relevant information to help safeguard children and prevent harm.
The scheme exists to protect children by ensuring adults are able to make informed decisions about who is allowed around them. Images and court information associated with Ward highlight the importance of Sarah’s Law in identifying risks and preventing further offences involving children.
